Australia Post's Australian Legends Award was launched in 1997 to honour living Australians who have made a unique contribution to the Australian way of life, have inspired the community and influenced the way Australians think about themselves and their country. Each Australian Legends Award is commemorated by the release of a set of Australia Post stamps and an accompanying book, written by a selection of Australia's great and respected writers. Forty-two famous names were honoured as Australian Legends over the first 13 years that the Award was presented. Sir Donald Bradman AC became the first living Australian to be featured on a postage stamp when he was named as the inaugural Australia Post Australian Legend in 1997. Prior to this groundbreaking stamp release, the only living persons to appear on Australian stamps were members of the British Royal Family.
